The Genting Group operates Malaysia’s only licensed casino. Located in Kuala Lumpur, the Casino de Genting has become one of the largest casino resorts in Southeast Asia since it was licensed by the Malaysian government in the late 1960s. The population of Malaysia is primarily Muslim, and the conservative Pan Islamic Party holds extremely hostile objections to casino gaming in the country. The Malaysian government’s Betting Control Unit addresses these concerns by mandating that the casino limit entry to foreigners and non-Muslims. Additionally, gambling premises may not be located near places of worship or schools.

A club in Kuala Lumpur was licensed to operate 250 slot machines in 2003, but extreme public opposition to further gambling in Malaysia prevented the venue from becoming a full casino. The government declared that it would grant no further casino licenses as of 2003.
