Marienlyst was the first casino in Denmark, and has been operating by special permission from the king of Denmark since the early 20th century. Currently Denmark has six casinos in operation as well as casino cruises.

Casino gaming was legalized in Denmark in 1990 when the government granted six casinos 10-year licenses. Operators include Casinos Austria and a number of German firms. Casinos were taxed and regulated by the Danish Ministry of Taxation until March 2011, when the National Gaming Authority of Denmark took over.

In July 2007, poker was ruled to be a game of skill by a court in Denmark. The ruling came after the Police Commissioners Prosecution Service brought a case against the Danish Poker Association for organizing poker tournaments. In December of the same year, that decision was reversed, and poker was ruled a game of chance by the Danish Supreme Court.

In January 2015, the Danish Parliament introduced stricter regulations on gaming arcades, after Danish authorities discovered numerous arcades abused tax deductions on charitable donations. The government decided to only allow "legitimate charities" to apply for funding, and a more permanent solution was implemented in 2017. In addition, gambling arcades are no longer able to operate between midnight and 7am.
